A Message from the Scientific and Executive Directors

This past year has been an exciting one for The Research Institute of St. Joe’s Hamilton (RSJH). As we emerge from the pandemic, we are inspired by the resiliency, determination, and success of our research and hospital communities. We continue to see exponential growth in research, as well as an increasingly strong focus on creating research and innovation outcomes that positively impact the lives of patients globally.

A key development this year has been the launch our inaugural strategic research plan, “Health and Humanity for All: Committed to Excellence, Dedicated to Discovery.” Through this plan we highlight our commitment to serving our research community and preserving our culture of kindness, humanity, compassion, and goodness. It is this culture, combined with our research excellence, that truly sets us apart and will be paramount in helping us retain and attract the very best research talent.

The development of this plan was a gift to both of us, as we were able to meet and speak to hundreds of individuals in our community and learn about what was really important to you. We hope you see your feedback incorporated into this plan, as well as the actions we take in the coming years. This is an organization made up of almost 200 investigators and 700 research staff and learners – we are committed to working with all of you to continue to build an enviable workplace and research enterprise.

Throughout this report you will see examples of the excellent research and innovation that goes on in our organization. From growth of research funding by 35% to $45 million, to more than 1200 publications and 497 active research projects, it is no wonder that we continue our climb from 26 to 24 in Research Infosource’s ranking of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals. It is this type of success that we want to continue to build upon, continuing to increase the national and international recognition of our organization.

As we look to future years, we are excited about what is to come – strengthening our partnership across the St. Joseph’s Health System, as well as positioning ourselves firmly as a key player in the national research and innovation ecosystem. The future is so bright and we look forward to working with all of you to continue our journey.
