Virtual reality (VR) allows the user to interact within a three-dimensional, computer-generated environment.<\/h6><\/div><\/div><div class=\"braket-block-content text et-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aggressive or violent incidents directed at healthcare workers are, unfortunately, not uncommon across the industry. These situations can have significant impacts to the physical and mental health of staff members.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If these situations are handled badly, they can lead to greater harm to staff, the patient, and their co-patients. Forensic psychiatrists provide services, such as determining competency to stand trial, and providing treatment, including medications and psychotherapy to individuals involved with the law.<\/h6><\/div><\/div><div class=\"braket-block-content text et-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>[\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forensic psychiatry researchers at St. Joe\u2019s, led by Dr. Gary Chaimowitz, are working in collaboration with Dr. Azim Gangji and the Department of Education &amp; Learning to create the next generation of training \u2013 using virtual reality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Forensic Psychiatry Service at St. Joe\u2019s is no stranger to using VR. In 2018, they used similar technology to create realistic virtual experiences for staff that were based on hospital and detention centre seclusion rooms, which are sometimes used with forensic patients.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe [were] looking at how long you can be in there before you get anxious,\u201d Dr. Chaimowitz told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/can-you-stand-segregation-these-researchers-are-using-virtual-reality-to-let-hospital-staff-see\/article_d3b5bac2-eb04-5974-9eff-2093b73bc091.html\"><em>The Toronto Star<\/em><\/a><em> in 2018<\/em>, \u201cand what it\u2019s like to have a different staff response, the idea being that we are going to try to sensitize staff to what it\u2019s like to be on the inside, which might change the way they interact with patients, both in terms of their tone and also a recognition of what it\u2019s like to be there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row_content&#8221; full_height=&#8221;yes&#8221; disable_element=&#8221;yes&#8221; parallax=&#8221;true&#8221; parallax_image=&#8221;1186&#8243;][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;750&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row disable_element=&#8221;yes&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation=&#8221;slideInRight&#8221; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1663090545140{background-color: #ffffff !important;}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong><em>Dr. Elizabeth Pawluk, DART Working Group<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest research project aims to evaluate the value of utilizing a simulated VR system to train for aggressive or violent scenarios on over 100 learners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis first-of-its-kind pilot project has the potential to widen the use of this innovative technology within our Hospital, System, and beyond,\u201d says Dr. Chaimowitz.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers will assess the project\u2019s ease of use and compare it to current training methods, with a focus on potential improvements in de-escalation use and the ability to learn asynchronously.
