WelcomeInnovation at St. Joe’s

A Year of Milestones and Achievements

In the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the Innovation & Partnerships team at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and The Research Institute of St. Joe’s remained committed to our strategic purpose, “Excellence in research and innovation, that delivers better health for all.” Here are some of the year’s most significant milestones:

Launch of the Innovation Hub

The recently launched the Innovation & Partnerships Hub on our website is an exciting addition to our culture of innovation at St. Joe’s. This new platform fosters collaboration across research, healthcare, and industry, providing innovators, researchers, healthcare staff, and industry leaders with access to unique programs and services. Key programs and services featured on the hub include:

  • Healthcare & Engineering Collaborative
  • The Clinic @ St. Joe’s
  • Commercialization & IP Protection through MILO
  • St. Joe’s Startup Companies
  • and more!

Academic Partnerships with McMaster University

In 2023, we expanded our collaboration with McMaster University to offer more learning, ideation, and partnership opportunities. Notably, The Research Institute partnered with the W Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology to encourage students in developing innovative healthcare solutions, enhancing outcomes for patients, caregivers, and providers alike. Furthermore, in collaboration with McMaster’s Marnix E. Heersink School of Biomedical Innovation and Entrepreneurship, we hosted a segment of the MBI Bootcamp, providing students with hands-on learning experiences, including a code blue simulation in our Simulation Space.

Further aligning with our “Create, Test, Spread” framework, we continued running the Healthcare Innovation Bootcamp at The Clinic @ St. Joe’s. This program supports health innovators and researchers in exploring and validating their ideas, advancing them toward commercial success through weekly challenges.

Support for Local Entrepreneurship

We are dedicated to supporting local startups in their growth and integration within the healthcare system. Through close collaboration with Minister Filomena Tassi from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), Innovation Factory, and the Synapse Consortium, we have helped startups bring their technologies into St. Joseph’s Health System via the SOPHIE program.

One of many successes is our work with PreOperative Performance, where we partnered to test their anisotropic diffusion phantom technology on MRI systems. This collaboration aims to provide neuroradiologists with improved tools to assess the quality of MRI diffusion imaging protocols, achieving new levels of precision in the field.

These milestones reflect our commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for all.
