Building Community
Events
The Research Institute of St. Joe’s is proud to offer a range of events to our researchers, staff, and the St. Joe’s community that focus on celebrating achievements, awareness, continuing education, appreciation, and relationship building. While many of our events moved to virtual platforms during the pandemic, such as Zoom and YouTube, we have since been working to optimize our events lineup for a hybrid setup – in-person and virtual. Doing so allows us to retain the accessibility and expanded reach of virtual events combined with the networking and community building that we experience with in-person events.

Celebrate Research
Celebrate Research is our annual flagship event. It brings together investigators, research staff, students, clinical staff, medical learners, local partners, and community members, giving us the opportunity to recognize the achievements of our colleagues and research programs. It’s a great place to network and connect with healthcare organizations in Hamilton, and to congratulate the winners of The Research Institute Awards Program.
In 2023, we hosted our tenth annual Celebrate Research event. For the first time since the pandemic began, we held this event in-person at St. Joe’s Charlton campus instead of a virtual presentation. Though the virtual format allowed us to reach a larger audience from 2020 to 2022 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, returning to the in-person format bolstered the sense of community.
Celebrate Research 2023 was held in November during our second Learning Pillar Week. This event saw its highest attendance to date. Learn more about the Award Winners or check out the Research Pillar Update video playlist (to the right), which was featured at the event.

Anne & Neil McArthur Research Award
The Anne & Neil McArthur Research Award is given annually to an internationally recognized researcher and is accompanied by a special presentation from the award recipient. Since 2020, we have opted to host a separate event for the McArthur Academic Presentation to allow for a live discussion with more engagement opportunities from the audience. The 2023 McArthur Award recipient is Dr. Lawrence Mbuagbaw, MD, MPH, PhD.
Dr. Mbuagbaw works as a research methods scientist in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics at The Research Institute of St. Joe’s Hamilton. As Director of St. Joe’s Biostatistics Unit, he provides methodological and statistical support for other researchers.
Dr. Mbuagbaw is an associate professor and University Scholar in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact (HEI) at McMaster University, where he teaches courses in biostatistics and randomized trials.

Dr. Mbuagbaw gave an academic talk entitled, “Empowering HIV Care: Navigating Mobile Health Solutions & Tackling Drug Resistance.”
Learning Pillar Week 2023
From November 6 to 10, 2023, The Research Institute once again teamed up with St. Joe’s Department of Education & Learning to co-host our second Learning Pillar Week – a week of educational workshops, seminars, and special events (including Celebrate Research) for St. Joe’s staff, researchers, physicians, and learners.
Learning Pillar Week 2023 saw an increase in the number of unique sessions and the number of attendees over the inaugural 2022 event.

With in-person and virtual sessions hosted by internal and external speakers, members of the St. Joe’s community were able to participate in a variety of professional development, networking, and recognition events.
St. Joe’s will host our third annual Learning Pillar Week from November 4 to 8, 2024.
